President Trump’s statement offering U.S. help to Russia over the death of a 28-year-old lab technician at the Anti-Plague Research Institute, framing it as a public health concern.
President Trump Offers U.S. Help After 28-Year-Old Lab Technician Dies at Russia’s Anti-Plague Institute President Donald Trump said the United States is willing to assist Russia after a 28-year-old laboratory technician died at the Anti-Plague Research Institute of Siberia and the Far East, calling the situation a public health concern.Trump told reporters the case is “a big problem for Russia” and noted that microbes have grown stronger over time, making some pneumonia treatments less effective than in the past.
He added that the U.S. is “always willing to help” any country facing this type of problem, even though he had not yet spoken directly with Russian officials about it.The technician, identified in Russian media as Darya Shipilova, worked at the Siberian institute that researches plague and other dangerous pathogens. She died in early October after developing severe pneumonia of unknown origin.
Russian health authorities placed roughly 200 of her contacts under medical observation as a precaution and later stated that testing found no microorganisms linked to her professional duties. Officials have described the regional situation as stable, with no additional staff illnesses reported and no confirmed plague cases in.
The World Health Organization has assessed the risk to the broader public as low.The Kremlin acknowledged Trump’s offer of assistance.
U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, said Washington is monitoring developments closely but sees no immediate cause for alarm.
The combination of a death at a specialized anti-plague facility, contact monitoring, and a direct U.S. offer of help has drawn international attention as authorities continue laboratory testing and contact follow-up.
